Description
In the Maasai language, an elephant is known as Oltome or olkanchoi. Elephants hold deep cultural significance for the Maasai, who exhibit profound respect for them, even leaving offerings of grass and twigs at their carcasses to honor the “fallen giants”. The Maasai Mara ecosystem, located in the region inhabited by the Maasai people, is famous for its substantial and growing African elephant population, which is a major draw for wildlife tourism and a critical component of local ecosystems.
