Description
Mount Kenya is considered a holy mountain by several Kenyan tribes, most notably the Kikuyu, who believe it is the dwelling place of their god, Ngai, and call it Kirinyaga or “White Mountain”. They would design their houses to face the sacred peak and bury their dead with their heads aligned towards the summit. The Kamba and Meru tribes also hold the mountain sacred, with the Meru viewing it as the realm of their god, Murungu.
Mount Ololokwe is a desert mountain that towers over the Samburu landscape and justifies its role as a sacred place for the Samburu people. It is deemed to be the home of God.
Ol Doinyo Lengai is the sacred “Mountain of God” to the Maasai people, located in the Great Rift Valley of Tanzania. This active stratovolcano is globally unique as the world’s only active carbonatite volcano. The name “Ol Doinyo Lengai” means “Mountain of God” in the Maa language, highlighting its deep cultural and spiritual significance to the Maasai, who inhabit the surrounding lands.
